Processing Times

Processing times vary depending on individual circumstances, including the completeness of your application and any additional checks required.

Travel

You can travel outside Australia and return as many times as you want while the visa is valid. Time spent outside Australia does not extend your visa duration.

Visa label

Your visa is electronically linked to your passport. You will not receive a physical visa label.

ELIGIBILITY

Be selected in the MATES ballot
You must be randomly selected in the MATES ballot to apply for this visa. If selected, you will receive a Notification of Selection letter with details on how to apply. Applications must be submitted within 30 days of selection, using the same passport registered in the ballot.

Hold a valid passport issued by India
You must hold a valid Indian passport at the time of ballot registration and visa application.

AGE
You must be 18 to 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of the ballot registration period.

LOCATION
You must be outside of Australia when applying for the visa and when your application is decided.

Have not previously participated in MATES

You cannot have previously entered Australia on a Subclass 403 MATES stream visa.

Have recently graduated from an eligible educational institution with an eligible qualification

You must have graduated from an eligible institution within two years of the ballot registration period opening. The institution must appear on the Indian Ministry of Education’s National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) India Rankings Overall 2024 List.

Eligible qualifications include:

• Bachelor degree

• Bachelor degree (honours/research)

• Postgraduate diploma

• Masters degree

• Doctoral degree.

The qualification must relate to industries such as:

• Renewable energy.

• Mining.

• Engineering.

• Information communications technology.

• Artificial intelligence.

• Financial technology.

• Agricultural technology.

Meet English language requirements
You must complete an English language test within one year before submitting your visa application or by the decision date if not submitted initially.

Minimum test scores:

• IELTS: Overall 6.0, at least 5 in each component.

• OET: At least ‘C’ in each component.

• TOEFL iBT: Overall 64, with minimum scores of 4 in listening and reading, 14 in speaking and writing.

• PTE Academic: Overall 50, at least 36 in each component.

• Cambridge C1 Advanced: Overall 169, at least 154 in each component.

Be able to support yourself and dependents

You must demonstrate financial capacity to support yourself and any dependents during your stay. This may include an employment offer or evidence of funds (about AUD 5,000 for the initial stay).

Meet the health requirement
You and your family members applying for the visa must meet health standards. Organize health examinations only after being invited to apply.

Meet the character requirement
All applicants aged 16 years or older must meet character requirements.

Have adequate health insurance
You and your dependents must have health insurance covering the entire stay in Australia, including medically necessary treatments and transport.

Genuine temporary stay requirement
Applicants must show a genuine intention to stay in Australia temporarily.

Have paid back debts to the Australian Government
If you or your dependents owe the Australian Government, repayment or arrangements for repayment must be made.

Not had a visa cancelled or an application refused
Your immigration history will be considered. Past visa cancellations or refusals may affect eligibility. you might not be eligible for this visa if you have had a visa cancelled or refused.
